Surface Finishes

There are a number of different finish types that can be applied on the surface of a commercial natural stone product. Some standard finish types have been included below, along with some that are less demanded.

Polish: The surface of the stone product is treated with a rotating abrasive head at certain speed to give the surface a glossy look and smooth feel.

Hone:This application is much like polish, only with reduced effect, so that the surface will feel still smooth but have a more matte look.

Tumbling:Tumbling is a process where the surface is literally tumbled with smaller stones to give the surface an older look. Therefore tumbled stones are also referred to as antiquated stone.

Fill: Some natural stone products, especially travertine has natural holes. The natural gaps on the surface of the product is filled with various fillers, generally with cement to prevent those gaps to be filled with dirt or other substances instead. The cement color changes according to the base color of the material and different fill colors give different effects.

Filled&Honed or Filled&Polished: The surface is first filled with the filler (cement, resin etc) then put through honing or polishing. These are the most common surface finishes demanded.

Brushed finish: This finish is achived by applying a rotary brush head over the surface thus giving a smooth but unevenly leveled feel. Mostly used together with edge chipping. See also Brushed&chipped edge.

Sand blasted finish: A matte finish with no glossy effect. To achieve sand blasted effect, the surface is bombarded with a pressurized flow of sand.

Cutting Direction; crosscut vs. veincut

Due to their natural formations, some travertines, marbles or even limestones may have a more distinguishable look when the stone block is cut ALONG the calcite lines.

Cross-cutting (a.k.a american cut) is where the block is cut across the veins, so that the vein formation will not be visible on the surface.

Vein-cutting (a.k.a turkish cut) is where the block is cut along the veins, so that the vein formation will be visible on the surface.

Bush-hammered finish: The surface is
